30 to 15 Days Before Moving

1. Sell or give anything away you won't move.  Plan a garage sale.
2. Make a list of everything to be moved.
   
3. Call several movers for estimates.
4. Gather and store dental, medical and pet's veterinary records.  Ask for a professional referral for a new doctor, dentist and veterinarian.
   
5. Pick up Change of Address Moving Kit from the post office.
   
6. For tax purposes, keep a record of all moving expenses and keep receipts of any items you donate to charity.
   
7. Arrange for disconnection of utilities and re-connection at new location.
   

14 Days Before Moving

1. Pack one room at a time and label all boxes as to what's in them and the room in your new house they should go to.  Label furniture as to the room where it should go.
2. Check to see if your large appliances need to be prepared for moving.
3. Arrange the transfer of important documents and fine jewelry.

7 Days Before Moving

1. Arrange the cancellation of newspaper and other home deliveries.
2. Arrange for cash, travelers checks, or certified checks. (Movers usually require cash or certified checks.)
3. Drain gas from your lawn mower and dispose of flammable items.
   
4. The following items should not be packed: aerosol cans, paint cans, bleach, alcohol, cleaning fluids, ammunition, perishable food, perfume, medicine, nail polish remover or anything else that could leak.
5. Arrange to have your phone disconnected.  Find out whether you can take your phone with you.  Ask about credits for phones at new locations.
6. Transfer your insurance so you will be covered at your new home.
   

Day Before Moving

1. Prepare a first aid kit for your trip.  Include your daily medical needs.
2. Pack a suitcase you can live out of, if necessary, for the first three days in your new home.
   
3. Empty and defrost refrigerator and freezer and let them air dry for a day.  Deodorize large appliances with baking soda or coffee.
   
4. Remember to leave the keys to your old property with your real estate agent, landlord or neighbor.
   
5. Save your phone book for tying up any loose ends when you get to your new residence.
   

Moving Day

1. Make final check to guarantee appliances are ready to be moved.
2. Give driver written directions to new address.
3. Confirm arrival date and time.
4. Pack vacuum last so you can reach it easily to clean new home.
5. Before you leave, check every room, closets and attic a final time.
6. Check locks on doors and windows.
   

When You Arrive

1. Be on hand for unloading and to supervise your furniture placement and delivery of packed boxes.
2. Inventory everything and make notes of damaged or missing items.
3. Check electrical wiring and fuses and water shut-off valves.
   
4. Start newspaper and other home deliveries.
   
5. Relax!  Organization has taken a lot of the worry out of moving.
